Present Duties

The Oregon Travel Information Council, doing business as Oregon Travel Experience (OTE), is a semi-independent state agency formed by the Legislature in 1972. OTE administers a broad menu of programs that enhance the public’s motoring experience. We help millions of travelers navigate to essential services with highway business logo signs and rest area travel information centers. Our state and local partners collaborate with us to establish services that emphasize customer satisfaction.

The council is comprised of 10 volunteer members appointed by the governor and one member representing the Oregon Transportation Commission. Council members determine rules and policies to guide OTE services and lend their professional expertise from the transportation, lodging, restaurant, recreation, advertising and vehicular service industries.

OTE has 52 employees. The central office in Salem accommodates administrative staff, and rest area specialists work in field offices. We provide oversight to the state’s Free Coffee Program in an effort to increase highway safety and reduce driver fatigue. The program is staffed by local non-profit organizations that serve coffee at rest areas.

In 2010, OTE’s rest area supervisory model was expanded, and an agreement with the Department of Transportation increased the number of rest areas OTE manages to 29.
