Present Duties
The Oregon State Board of Nursing was established in 1911 to regulate nursing practice and education to protect the public’s health, safety and well-being. The board examines, licenses and renews licenses of qualified Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses; certifies all nursing assistants and establishes standards for their training and certification; licenses nurse practitioners and grants prescriptive and dispensing authority to qualified nurse practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists; licenses Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and Clinical Nurse Specialists; prescribes essential curricula and standards for nursing education programs; surveys and approves nursing education programs which meet board standards; and investigates complaints about nurses and nursing assistants to determine whether there have been violations of laws or standards.
Members are appointed by the governor for terms of three years. License fees finance all board programs.
