Present Duties
The Office of State Fire Marshal was created in 1917 and was consolidated in 1993 into the Department of State Police. The office is charged with reducing the loss of life and property from fire, explosion and hazardous materials and minimizing the fire and life-safety hazards of structures, equipment and materials exposed to fire risks. Program areas cover fire prevention and investigation; uniform fire and life safety code development, adoption and interpretation; Community Right to Know; public education and firesetter intervention; industry licensing and permits relating to liquefied petroleum gas, fireworks and explosives; licensing and surveying non-retail gasoline dispensing; Regional Hazardous Materials Response Team system; and the All Incident Reporting system.
